What Is a Bridge?
A bridge is a set of composite teeth that are used to replace your missing natural teeth. When Dr. Griffin applies a bridge, he places support crowns on healthy teeth on either side of the missing teeth and then anchors the bridge to those teeth. The result is a healthy looking smile without gaps.
What Are The Advantages of All Porcelain Bridges?
Years ago, bridges were constructed from a metal core covered with porcelain. No matter how closely the porcelain matched the appearance of your natural teeth, the metal core showed through as a dark blue line at the edge of the bridge. At one time, this core was the only way bridges could withstand the tremendous biting forces that a person’s teeth exert.
With recent advances in dental technology, bridges can be made entirely of porcelain, a material which mimics both the appearance and luminance of your natural tooth enamel. This porcelain is just as strong as the original metal core. Not only does this eradicate the dark line and make your bridge look more natural, it allows Dr. Griffin to place the bridge above the gumline, which is healthier for your teeth and gums.
What Happens When I Need a Bridge?
Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge requires two or more appointments. During the first appointment, Dr. Griffin prepares your teeth and takes an impression. This gives us an accurate working model of your mouth and your natural bite. A dental laboratory uses this model to build a bridge that will fit your teeth precisely. Finally, Dr. Griffin places a temporary bridge, which you will wear while the laboratory creates your new bridge.
At your final visit, we remove the temporary bridge and place your new bridge. First, Dr. Griffin checks the fit and your bite with the bridge. When everything looks good, he cements your new porcelain bridge in place.
