Children’s Dentistry
When you bring your child to our practice, we are honored that you are placing your trust in us. Dr. Griffin can establish an excellent foundation for your child’s dental health with the following services.
First Examinations
Dr. Griffin would like to see your child on or after their third birthday. At that age, they are big enough to sit by themselves in the dental chair. We want their first visit to be a comfortable and positive one, so we will only do a basic exam and polish their teeth. At this time, we will not take any x-rays, unless there is an emergency. Throughout the appointment, we will only go as far as your child feels comfortable.
Sometimes children under the age of eight can become unmanageable in the dental chair. We never force any treatment upon a child or attempt to restrain them. If your child refuses to follow directions or cooperate with our team, Dr. Griffin will refer them to a pedodontist, a dentist who specializes in children’s dentistry and provides sedation to help them relax while in our practice. In some cases, it may be in your child’s best interest to begin their dental experience with a pedodontist.
Preventive Care
We offer a wide range of preventive and restorative care services for children. After your child’s initial examination, we can perform regular cleanings and fluoride treatments to protect their developing teeth. Dr. Griffin also offers dental sealants, which prevent decay from forming on the chewing surfaces of your child’s baby and permanent molars. Sealants are painlessly bonded to your child’s teeth and last for years.
Fillings
If your child does have a cavity, Dr. Griffin can place fillings in their teeth. Most fillings do not require the use of local anesthesia. All your child feels during this minor procedure is a little vibration on their tooth.
Damaged or Knocked-Out Teeth
We can handle any type of emergency your child will have. If your child has damaged or knocked out their tooth, you have one hour to get your child into our practice to have the tooth re-implanted and saved. When the tooth is knocked out, place the tooth in a glass of water or milk and quickly bring the tooth and child into the dental office. Waiting to seek treatment reduces the chances that the tooth can be saved. Even if the child says they’re okay after an accident, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Griffin immediately. We can x-ray the tooth to see if the tooth structure, nerve, or root has been damaged.
We can’t wait to meet you and your child. You can schedule their first consultation with Dr. Griffin by calling our practice at 713-827-1002.
