Sleep Apnea and Snore Guard Treatment
Snoring is caused when your airway becomes narrower. Since air moves faster through a narrow tube than a wide one, it causes the soft tissues of the throat (the tonsils, soft palate and uvula) to vibrate, creating the snoring sound.
Your throat may be narrower while your sleep for a number of reasons. You may have large tonsils or a long soft palate or uvula. If you are overweight, you may have excessive tissue narrowing the airway. Your tongue muscles may have also relaxed during sleep and are blocking the airway.
Snoring is generally harmless, but if the airway is blocked too much, you can stop breathing. While most sleepers will partially wake, changing their position and opening their airway, the lack of oxygen to the brain can take its toll on your body.
In this case, Dr. Griffin recommends a snoreguard. This small plastic device is worn in the mouth during sleep to prevent the soft throat tissues from blocking the airway. Snoreguards are custom-made and fit to match your unique snoring condition.
They are also small and easy to wear. Most people find it takes no more than a few weeks to become completely comfortable wearing the appliance. Best of all, snoreguards are relatively inexpensive.
If you snore heavily and are interested in trying dental appliance therapy, schedule a consultation with Dr. Griffin. After examining your teeth and mouth, he will create a temporary guard for you to try.
